Gulmohar (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Anupama Chopra Film Companion Some of the ideas and character arcs seem stitched on rather than baked into the narrative. But despite these bumps, Gulmohar doesn’t lose its emotional heft or ache. Mar 3, 2023 Full Review Gulmohar (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Anuj Kumar The Hindu A polished piece of family drama driven by identifiable characters and well-crafted performances, Gulmohar is akin to that kind of tree trimmed more regularly than watered by the gardener. Aug 17, 2024 Full Review Gulmohar (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Ishita Sengupta OTTplay Chittella’s debut feature seems to stand at the crossroads of consequences, like it is one scene shy from stealing the scene, a moment away from seizing the moment. Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Gulmohar (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) John Serba Decider Although Gulmohar begs for another pass through the writers’ room, it’s still a solid family-ties drama carried by the power of its performances. Vetticad Firstpost ...conversations give way to incessant philosophising and characters start dispensing wisdom to each other in a manner that is less like regular humans conversing than actors doing their utmost with dialogues written for them. Pranay K Hindi Cinema is SO BACKKKKK 💗🌸🤍✨🥰 Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review Hemant S "Gulmohar" is a drama that thrives on the more realistic elements and emotional wires that connect a family, and is refreshing in that aspect. There have been a few predecessors in the genre, specifically the more recent "Jug Jugg Jiyo" (2022) which was more of a comedy, tilting on more slapstick than the drama, "Dil Dhadakne Do" (2015), a more serious film but inclining on romance and songs, "Khosla Ka Ghosla!" (2006) one of the critically acclaimed entries adequately interspersed with humor and of course "Monsoon Wedding" (2001), that has been a field of inspiration for Rahul V. Chittela's full length feature debut."Gulmohar" does stand on its own strength. It all starts on a night when a joint family headed by a matriarch, Kusum (Sharmila Tagore) succeeded by her only son Arun (Manoj Bajpayee) celebrates a night to bid farewell to their haven of years, Gulmohar. Events roll down after in a natural flow, constructing the narrative of the film. One of the few names that stood out starkly for me while the title credits rolled up was Siddhartha Khosla – who created music for the very emotive English series, "This Is Us". The film paces through quite smoothly and without wasting much time. Though it was a task to pin point and label the relationships right from the first scene, some deduction and guessing is plausible there. Khosla's music does indeed form an important bone in the narrative. The key factor that drew me to watch "Gulmohar" was the amazing cast of actors that had been pulled together. Manoj Bajpayee, Sharmila Tagore, Amol Palekar, Suraj Sharma, Simran and even Vinod Nagpal in a brief but essential role. All from different generations in the industry of films and equally credible in their own domains, and I feel they deliver in their own parts.Especially Manoj Bajpayee, who in my view shoulders a role that lends him a canvas to deliver intensity, subtle touches of humor, candidness and a few more notes in the spectrum. He shares a great on screen chemistry with Simran as a couple who have stuck by each other through happies and woes of marriage. Sharmila Tagore and Amol Palekar are still as good at the craft as they were in their heydays. And there is a wonderful sprinkling of new comers and rising actors in the ensemble including Kaveri Seth, Jatin Goswami, Utsavi Jha and Santhy Balachandran. One might say Suraj Sharma was a bit too much in the background, especially after his dream debut in "Life Of Pi" (2012) and string of successful ventures, including the series "Homeland". Though I feel he still delivers a great act in a story that divides focus on a variety of characters in a limited time.Through the movie, I did feel fear that the story would have picked parts of "This Is Us", and Chittela does draw inspiration (those who have seen "This Is Us" will recognize the familiar parts) but to his credit, he blends those inspirational moments naturally into a very Indian context and wins there big time.It may or may not tug on your strings, but in the end it is a concise, well filmed and acted feature. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/23 Full Review arvind s I reiterate; I am a sucker for slice of life movies and this family drama by Rahul Chittella is a stellar example of why I love such films. Heartfelt and at times heartbreaking but also a story that will have you feeling all fuzzy inside. Gulmohar is the story of the Batras, who live in Gulmohar Villa in Delhi. Due to some building requirements, they are planning to sell the house and the family members are going their own way. During their last 4 days living in Gulmohar Villa, secrets start to roll out. Manoj Bajpayee has my heart. Every character of his is special in their own way. Also, this may have been the first that I have seen him play a sophisticated character 😂. His co-stars make this family drama even more wholesome. Simran, plays his wife; Suraj Sharma, his son & Kaveri Seth, his Daughter-in-law; Sharmila Tagore, his mom & Utsavi Jha, his daughter. Chandan Roy, Jatin Goswami & Santhy Balachandran play the house helps and their track runs in parallel to the Batras & is given equal importance. Gulmohar suffers from a runtime issue but that doesn't hamper the viewing experience because of the performances & Siddhartha Khosla's score that elevates this touching family drama. Do not miss this gem of a movie that will tug at your heartstrings. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/23 Full Review RITESH K A conventional family drama movie touching various family, relationship, individual and societal issues in a beautiful way. Manoj Bajpayee and Sharmila Tagore at their best to keep you wanting more. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/23 Full Review Abhijeet P A realistic portrait of Indian family Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review Sarika R With the exception of having the vibe of Monsoon Wedding, the movie is weak, the climax is very disappointing. There is no attempt to explain why the deceased father in the movie did what he did which lead to the series of events shown. In fact, his action sends an extremely wrong message. All in all, very disappointing. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
